I’m Joshua Bretag, a freelance pipeline consultant in Vancouver, BC with over 20 years of experience in the media and entertainment industry. I’ve worked as a Head of Pipeline, Pipeline Supervisor, Senior and Lead Pipeline TD, and Global Support Engineer for leading studios around the world.

Throughout my career, I’ve helped teams deliver high-end animation and VFX by building smarter, more efficient production pipelines. From real-time content to traditional animation and hybrid workflows, I specialize in solving complex technical challenges – whether that means developing custom Python tools, streamlining asset management, or integrating creative software.

What sets me apart is my deep understanding of both the technical and creative sides of the production process. I’ve worked closely alongside Heads of CG, giving me a clear perspective on artistic needs and how to support them with reliable tools and workflows. I also have a strong 2D background and a specialism in 3D-to-2D pipelines.

At Grumbo Media, I collaborate with small and mid-sized studios who need independent, high-impact pipeline support. My work is hands-on and personalised: I help teams identify bottlenecks, future-proof their systems, and help their artists to focus on what they do best – creating stunning content.

I’m passionate about mentoring emerging technical artists and strengthening technical foundations at the studio level. I believe pipelines should serve people, not just software. That means designing systems that are clear, flexible, and aligned with the way your team works.
